American Voices: Songs from great American composers George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and more
This concert exhibits an assortment of the best of American secular music. Among the offerings are selections from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, with their raw emotional power, Randall Thompson’s “Choose Something Like a Star,” (lyrics by Robert Frost) with its classical feel, “Gentle Annie,” a sentimental ballad by Steven Foster, the most popular composer of the mid-1800s, Cole Porter’s witty and playful, “Let’s Do It,” and Harold Arlen’s wistful “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” Traditional folk songs, such as “Poor Wayfaring Stranger,” round out this this concert that we will share with our friends in Frederick and then later in Schifferstadt, Germany
