June 13 - 22, 2017
The Chorale will devote the 2016-2017 season to preparing for a June choral tour of central Germany, the land of some of Frederick's first European settlers. The 40th anniversary year of the Chorale (October, 2017) coincides with the 500th anniversary year of Martin Luther's daring protest against his own church (October, 1517) that led to changes in religion, politics, history, and music of the western world. As musical ambassadors from the Frederick community, the Chorale's tour of Germany will pay tribute to these circumstances that intersect with our identity and mission. Each member of the Chorale will pay his or her own way—no Chorale operating funds will be used to fund this trip.
We begin our tour in Berlin at the Luther Choral Festival, celebrating 500 years of Reformation. We will join singers from across the globe for a choral extravaganza at the magnificent Berliner Dom under the direction of internationally-renowned conductor Helmuth Rilling, singing the music of Mendelssohn and Bach, including the iconic Eine Feste Berg Ist Unser Gott.
The Frederick Chorale is proud to have auditioned and been selected to perform at the historic Thomaskirche, where J.S. Bach served as music director for 27 years.
We wind up our tour in Schifferstadt, Frederick's Sister City. As musical ambassadors from the Frederick community, we will share a selection of traditional American music with our German audience, and offer gifts on behalf of our community here at home.
